Consistency – the key to success

Karmea Focus of the Month

Consistency : 1. steadfast adherence to the same principles, course, form, etc.

2. the condition of cohering or holding together and retaining form.

3. agreement, harmony, or compatibility, especially correspondence or uniformity among the parts of a complex thing.

As a coach I often get asked what the key to success is, either for an event or succeeding in your full health and wellness potential.
Consistency tops the list every time.
Yep, it’s that simple.  And that difficult.  Consistency takes commitment, focus, an unwavering belief in what you are capable of, and a strong mental vision of where you want to be.

.

The Chinese symbol for ‘practice’ shows a baby bird flapping its wings constantly in attempt to learn how to fly.  The baby bird has no choice, it’s fly or die.
While our commitment to our tasks is very rarely life threatening, it’s that single minded focus which will help your goals take flight.

It takes great commitment to be consistent.  The journey towards your destination can be easily swayed or influenced by external factors, as well as hitting a few bumps of self-doubt along the way.

Those that achieve their dreams and reach success are the ones that you will see the most consistency from – ticking off every session in their weekly plan, turning up to sessions come rail, hail or shine, and never cutting sessions short.

But it goes deeper than that. These people seem to eat up each session, relish the next one, look after their bodies, do their mental ‘working in’, and leave no room for excuses. Their attitude is one of a constant thirst for knowledge and never ending exploration of their possibilities and capabilities.

So how do you commit to consistency?  These are our top 5 tips for keeping your eye on the prize:

  1. Take it one day at a time.  When you look too far ahead things can seem overwhelming or you can get frustrated with your slow progress.  Focus on making today the best day it can be.
  2. Set achievable goals.  Don’t overdo it in week one and crash and burn in week two!

  3. Make yourself accountable – whether that be through a coach and formal training program, putting aside half an hour every sunday to review your week and plan for the next one, or setting up a training buddy to work towards your goals with.

  4. Build your training up gradually

  5. Look after the whole picture:  sleep, nutrition, recovery and ‘working in’ (mental wellbeing).

Where do you want to be in a month? 6 months? A year?

Consistency is how you will get there.

So, tomorrow, wake up and commit fully to your day ahead. Live in that moment. Make it a day of 100% giving it your all, green lights all the way down the road ahead, and doing all you can to make life happen as you dream.
